Past, Present and Future with SOS
SOS’s journey began in January 2010 with the gathering of eight women who had a vision of starting a Santa Rosa Sweet Adeline chorus . . . with Sharon Carlson as Director. After a few planning meetings, the first rehearsal took place in Sharon’s home in April. During the following months the process of chartering a new chorus with the International organization evolved until the first visit and evaluation by the Region 12 membership and education coordinators took place at Sharon’s in August. Even though it was a miserably hot day, the performance was impressive. Now it was time for growth.
In September the money “jar” and membership had grown enough to take the bold step of renting a rehearsal hall. Almost doubling in size with 15 members, but still small enough to use the stage steps as risers during rehearsals, the process of chartering a new chorus with the International organization continued. The second visit and evaluation took place on November 9th, the wettest day of the year. It was a successful performance because SOS was approved with a full charter on November 22, 2010, a record achievement that took only five and a half months . . . now with 20 members. Every six weeks a free mini performance took place in order to familiarize the chorus with the presence of an audience. Growth continued.
By April, 2011, SOS competed in its first regional competition as contestant #5, from Santa Rosa under the direction of Sharon Carlson, Song of Sonoma Chorus. With 29 members, the group surpassed all expectations by winning 1st place in the small chorus division and 5th place overall. That’s an achievement! October, 2011, marked the first chorus show presented to a wildly enthusiastic audience. With a repertoire of 12 mostly choreographed songs, the SOS singers proved their talent and passion for the music and chorus were boundless. Growth continued.
The second regional competition took place on April, 2012 with 39 singers on stage. The chorus goals of reaching out into the community, marketing the chorus, and promoting barbershop music were met with events such as a flash mob, Christmas carol caravan, shows, and a Barbershop Music Camp (the first in Sonoma County.) Growth continued.
Having just completed our third regional competition, 57 singers won 2nd place in our division and 4th place overall. So much to be proud of with an energy and joy of shared musical experience that keeps the group moving ever forward.
Growth is limitless.
